Hi Gerry! Tell us a little about yourself and your role in Jawbox.
I have worked in the Hospitality industry for over 30 years now and in all that time the only spirit I really enjoyed and had a passion for was Gin. I would have tried Gins from all around the world and always had the dream of one day creating my own brand. So in 2014 I registered the Trademark for Jawbox Gin and started the process of making the dream come true.
Please share some history about your brand, the name of it and how it came about!
Naming the gin “Jawbox” was very important to me, it came from remembering stories my Grandmother would have told about back in the day when friends and family would have gathered in the small Scullery around the big Belfast Sink and shared their stories, told their tales, commiserated and celebrated and so the Belfast Sink got the nickname “The Jawbox”. I always wanted people to share my gin with their family and friends as they shared the stories of their day as they enjoyed a drink after work, weekends or at a party, so this was the perfect name.
I spent a lot of time meeting different distillers, distribution and marketing teams to ensure I got the very best. I already knew the team from Drinksology and was in no doubt they would be the very best team to try and get on board with Jawbox and once they did things started to move very quickly, they introduced me to Shane Braniff, owner of the Echlinville Distillery. As soon as I meet Shane, visited the Distillery and meet his Master Distiller Graeme Miller I knew I had found the perfect place for Jawbox to be born.
Jawbox Gin was launched by the Lord Mayor of Belfast at a Trade Only event on 22nd February 2016. Since then Jawbox has went on to win many awards such as, Best New Business at the Belfast Business Awards, Best UK Gin at the Quality Food & Drink Awards, Daily Mirror Top 10 Best Gins 2018, 2020, Supplier / Product of the Year at the Institute of Hospitality Awards, Best Gin Exports at the Irish Gin Awards. In 2018 we launched our two new Jawbox Gin Liqueurs, Pineapple & Ginger and our Rhubarb & Ginger, both made using our Classic Dry Jawbox Gin as the base. Both have proved to be a big hit and extremely popular, with the Pineapple and Ginger liqueur going on to win Best Irish Gin Liqueur at the Irish Gin Awards.
We have lots of very exciting plans for Jawbox, but sadly for the moment these have been put on hold due to the present situation with the virus. But there are very exciting times ahead for the brand as things start to return to normal.
Another great and world famous Belfast invention is Ginger Ale, so this was the absolute Perfect match for the Jawbox Gin ‘Perfect Swerve’ a very simple but totally delicious and refreshing drink.
